Step 1: Gather your documents

No ID? Apply anyway. Most states have alternative documentation paths. Call 211 for help getting documents together.

Step 2: Find your state's SNAP portal

Each state runs its own SNAP application. Common state portal names: "MyBenefits", "ACES.online", "Your[State]Benefits", "DTA Connect", "Access Florida". Use the directory:

Step 3: Apply

Three options:

  1. Online — fastest. Most states approve in 7-30 days.
  2. By phone — call your state SNAP agency. They can process applications by phone in many states.
  3. In person — find your nearest SNAP office on feedam.org.

Step 4: The interview

Within 30 days of applying, your state SNAP agency calls you for a 30-minute interview. Be ready to confirm income, expenses, and household composition. Expedited applicants (income near zero) get a 7-day decision.

Step 5: EBT card

If approved, your Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card arrives by mail within 7-10 days. Use it like a debit card at any SNAP-accepting store. Cards are reloaded monthly.

Common questions

Does SNAP affect my immigration status?

No — SNAP for citizen children does NOT affect immigration status. The "public charge" rule does not apply to SNAP for citizens or legal residents. Non-immigrant visa holders (tourists, students) are generally not eligible. See our immigrant food help guide.

What's the SNAP income limit?

Gross monthly income must be ≤130% of the federal poverty level. For a family of 4 in 2026, that's roughly $3,380/month before deductions. Net income (after deductions) must be ≤100% of poverty.

How long does approval take?

Standard: 30 days. Expedited (very low income): 7 days. If you don't hear back in 30 days, contact your state SNAP agency or call 211.

Was my application denied — can I appeal?

Yes. Every state allows you to request a fair hearing within 60-90 days of denial. The hearing is free. Your state SNAP agency or local legal aid can help.
