How to Apply for SNAP (Food Stamps)

Apply through the SNAP agency in the state where you live. Your agency determines eligibility and benefit amounts using current rules and your household circumstances.

Step 1 · Find current eligibility guidance

Read USDA eligibility guidance and contact your state agency about income, deductions, household members and any special rules. Benefit estimates on this site are temporarily unavailable. An earlier estimate should not decide whether you apply.

Step 2 · Ask what documents you need

Your agency will explain the information and documents required for your household. Ask about alternatives if you are missing documents, need language assistance or do not have a permanent address.

Step 3 · Submit your application

Use the USDA state directory to find official application options. Check with your agency about the available online, mail, phone or in-person process. Keep a copy or confirmation of your submission.

Step 4 · Follow your agency instructions

Respond to requests for an interview or additional documents by the deadlines in your notices. Contact the agency if you cannot meet a deadline or need an accommodation.

Step 5 · Review the decision

Your agency notice explains the decision, benefit amount and next steps. If approved, ask how to receive and use your EBT card and when benefits will be issued. If you disagree with a decision, follow the review or appeal instructions and deadlines in your notice.

Official state application information

The USDA directory provides current state contacts and application information. Existing state links are below; use the directory if a portal has changed.

Questions for your state agency

Ask about work requirements, student rules, eligible household members, deductions and expedited service. These questions require current rules and your circumstances; this guide does not make an eligibility determination.

If you need food while waiting, find nearby food assistance. For current maximum benefits and effective dates, consult the USDA benefit tables.
