When do SNAP benefits load?
Not on the first of the month for most people. Every state spreads deposits across several days — and which day is yours depends on a number you already have.
How states decide your day
SNAP deposits are staggered so stores and the payment system are not overwhelmed on one day. States use one of these to assign your date:
- The last digits of your case number
- The last digits of your Social Security number
- The first letter of your last name
- Your date of birth
Your date usually stays the same every month once assigned. Pick your state below for the exact schedule and the rule it uses.
Benefits do not expire at the end of the month. Unspent SNAP rolls over and stays on your card. It is removed only after a long period of no activity — typically 9 to 12 months depending on the state.
If your deposit has not arrived
- Check the balance first — see how to check your EBT balance. Deposits often land overnight.
- If your date has passed and nothing arrived, call your state agency (number on your state page below). A missed recertification is the most common cause.
- Need food today? Search free food pantries by ZIP code or call 211. Pantries do not require SNAP enrollment.
