Food Help for College Students
30%+ of US college students experience food insecurity. These resources are student-specific: campus pantries, special SNAP eligibility, meal-swipe apps, state programs.
1. Campus food pantries (CUFBA)
850+ US colleges have on-campus pantries. The College and University Food Bank Alliance (CUFBA) maintains a directory. Campus pantries typically do NOT require low-income proof — just student ID.
- Ask your student counselor or student services coordinator
- CUFBA directory: cufba.org
- Or search "[your school] food pantry" in Google
2. SNAP eligibility for students
Full-time college students (enrolled at least half-time) are generally NOT eligible for SNAP — UNLESS they meet ONE of these exceptions:
- Work ≥20 hours/week (paid)
- Participate in federal/state work-study
- Have a disability
- Care for a dependent under 6
- Care for a dependent 6-11 + childcare unavailable
- Are a single parent enrolled in college full-time + care for a dependent under 12
- Receive TANF
- Are in a state-approved training/employment program
Rules are intricate — worth applying even if you're not sure you qualify. Processing is free.

3. Swipe Out Hunger
App that lets students with unused meal-plan swipes donate them to peers experiencing food insecurity. Available at 100+ colleges. swipehunger.org
4. State college meal programs
Some states fund programs covering low-income student meals:
- California: AB-396 + AB-1326 (CalFresh + university meal plans)
- New York: SUNY/CUNY food-insecurity initiatives
- Massachusetts: Hunger-Free Campus Initiative
- 20+ states: "Hunger-Free Campus" designations
5. Off-campus + community pantries
If your school doesn't have a campus pantry or you live off-campus:
Other student resources
- Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA): funded postsecondary education can cover food (housing + food = "cost of attendance")
- Pell Grant: can be used for food as part of cost of attendance
- Campus Career Center: ask about work-study (which satisfies SNAP's 20-hour eligibility requirement)
