~57M Americans live with a mental health condition (NAMI). People with severe mental illness face elevated food-insecurity rates — barriers include transport access, cooking capacity, executive function during crisis. This page lists specific resources.
1. SSI/SSDI — mental illnesses qualify
Under SSA Listing 12.00, several severe mental conditions qualify for SSI / SSDI:
- 12.02 Neurocognitive disorders — dementia, Alzheimer\u0027s
- 12.03 Schizophrenic disorders
- 12.04 Depressive / bipolar disorders
- 12.06 Anxiety disorders
- 12.08 Personality disorders
- 12.10 Autism spectrum
- 12.11 Neurodevelopmental — ADHD, dyslexia
- 12.13 Trauma-related disorders — PTSD
- 12.15 Substance use disorders — listed but require severe functioning impairment
Receiving SSI/SSDI makes you AUTOMATICALLY eligible for SNAP medical deduction (medical expenses over $35/month deduct from income) AND exempt from ABAWD.
2. SNAP — mental health medical deduction
Under 7 CFR 273.9(d)(1), if you have SSI/SSDI or 60+, mental health expenses are deductible:
- Psychiatric medication + copays + premiums
- Psychiatrist / therapist / counselor visits
- Psychiatric hospitalizations / IOP / PHP programs
- Transport to appointments (mileage + parking)
- Prescribed supplements for anxiety / depression
- Case management / peer support
3. ABAWD exemption for mental illness
- Under 7 CFR 273.24(b)(1)(i), if medically certified unable to work (includes severe mental illness), you are EXEMPT from ABAWD requirement

4. CMHC — Community Mental Health Center
Community Mental Health Centers (CMHCs) under Community Mental Health Services Block Grant (CMHSBG). Sliding-scale or free services.
- Approximately 2,500 CMHCs in US
- Services: therapy, psychiatry, case management, peer support
- Often connect to pantries + meals + resources

5. PSR / Clubhouse — community meals
Psychosocial Rehabilitation (PSR) Programs and Clubhouses (Fountain House model) offer community environment with meals + activities + vocational supports.

- Fountain House (NYC) — fountainhouse.org. Original model.
- Covered by Medicaid in many states; free for members
- Voluntary membership — no pressure, no requirements. Cheap or free meals.
6. Meals during psychiatric crisis
- Psychiatric hospitalization — meals included. Covered by Medicare / Medicaid / private insurance.
- IOP / PHP programs — often include meals during the day. Insurance-covered.
- Crisis Stabilization Units — 24-72 hour stays with meals. Alternative to psychiatric ER.
- Peer respite — homes run by people with lived experience. Voluntary stays with meals.

- EBT-eligible prepared meals — most grocery stores have "ready meals" section that\u0027s eligible. Microwave to heat.
- Restaurant Meals Program — in 9 states (AZ, CA, IL, MD, MA, MI, NY, RI, VA), disabled can use EBT at participating restaurants
- Meals on Wheels — delivers hot meals to homebound disabled
- Pantries with ready-to-eat food — ask local pantry about no-cook options
