Food Help for Veterans
1.4M+ veterans experience food insecurity annually. These resources are veteran-specific: VA, SNAP, dedicated pantries, Stand Down events.
1. VA-funded veteran wellness line
- Veterans Crisis Line: Dial 988, press 1
- VA Caregiver Support Line: 1-855-260-3274
- Ask about connection to food resources and VA primary care food-as-medicine programs
2. SNAP for veterans
Veterans qualify for SNAP under the same rules as any other household. Important exception: veterans receiving VA Disability Compensation have those payments counted as income. However, disabled veterans can:
- Qualify for medical expense deduction if medical expenses over $35/mo
- Benefit from higher asset limit ($4,500 if 60+ or disabled vs $3,000)
- Receive expedited processing if little/no income (7-day expedited processing)

3. Veteran-friendly food pantries
Pantries operated by veterans\u0027 organizations typically do NOT require proof of low income — just proof of service (DD-214 or VA ID card). Resources:
- Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) — many local posts maintain pantries. vfw.org/find-a-post
- American Legion — some posts offer pantries; legion.org
- Disabled American Veterans (DAV) — dav.org
- Vietnam Veterans of America — vva.org
Or search the Feed America directory with the "for veterans" filter:
4. Stand Down events (annual)
Stand Down events are annual service fairs connecting homeless veterans with food, clothing, healthcare, legal aid, VA services, and employment. 200+ cities host Stand Downs each year. Find one: nchv.org/stand-down
5. MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger
MAZON operates the "Veteran Food Insecurity Initiative" with veteran-specific resources. mazon.org/veterans
6. VFW Buddy Poppy / Buddy Bag Program
Some VFW posts operate the "Buddy Bag" program — monthly grocery bags delivered to veterans identified as in need. Ask at your local VFW post.
7. VA-funded supportive services
- SSVF (Supportive Services for Veteran Families) — emergency financial aid for housing + food + utilities for veterans at risk of homelessness. va.gov/homeless/ssvf
- HUD-VASH — housing vouchers for homeless veterans (Section 8 + VA support)
