SNAP Interview Questions — Complete Preparation
Every SNAP application requires an eligibility interview — typically 15-30 minutes by phone. This guide covers all the standard questions, what documents to prepare, how to answer honestly and effectively, and what to do if the interview doesn't go well.
1. How the interview works
- Scheduling — agency calls or mails notice with appointment. If you cannot that day, call to reschedule BEFORE the appointment (not after).
- Modality — most states offer phone by default. Some require video or in-person in complex cases.
- Language — you can request a free interpreter in any language. Request when scheduling.
- Duration — 15-30 min typical; 45-60 min for complex cases
- Not a trial — the worker is a public servant, not a judge. They want to help you qualify if eligible.
2. Before the interview — preparation
Gather these documents. Have them ready when they call — worker may ask for references during the call.
| Category | Documents |
|---|---|
| Identity | Driver license, passport, state ID, school ID, birth certificate |
| Citizenship / Status | US birth cert / US passport / Naturalization Cert / I-94 / Green Card |
| SS / ITIN | SS card or ITIN number for each member |
| Income | Pay stubs (4 weeks), SS letter, pension, unemployment, child support received |
| Housing | Rent receipt or mortgage bill, utility bills (electric, gas, water, heat) |
| Medical (60+ or disabled) | Pharmacy receipts, EOBs, insurance premiums, transport to appointments, medical equipment |
| Child care | Daycare / after-school / summer camp receipts |
| Child support paid | Court decree, log of payments made |
| Assets | Bank balances, vehicle registration (if state has limit) |
3. Standard questions (every interview)
- "Who lives in your household and how are they related to you?" (all members, ages, relationship)
- "Are you a US citizen? If not, what is your immigration status?"
- "What is your Social Security number? And other members' SSNs?"
- "Do you currently work? Where, how many hours, how much do you earn?"
- "Do you receive Social Security, SSI, SSDI, pension, unemployment, child support, or any other income?"
- "How much do you pay for rent or mortgage? Which utilities do you pay?"
- "Do you have medical expenses over $35/month? (only if 60+ or disabled)"
- "Do you pay for child care so you can work / school / job-search?"
- "Do you pay child support to a non-custodial parent?"
- "How much do you have in bank accounts / cash / assets?"
- "Is anyone in the household 60+ or disabled?"
- "Were you working in the last 60 days? When did it end? Why?"
4. Key tips
- Always be honest — workers cross-check data with IRS / SS / employers. Lying counts as SNAP fraud — penalties from 1-year to permanent disqualification.
- Report gross income, not net — gross income determines initial eligibility; deductions (taxes, health insurance) do NOT subtract at this calculation step.
- Mention every expense — high expenses reduce countable income and increase benefits. Do NOT omit utilities, medical, child care.
- If unsure, say so — "I'm not sure" is better than guessing. Worker can help clarify.
- Ask about ABAWD — if you're 18-54 with no dependents and work less than 80 hours/month, you're subject to the ABAWD 3-months-per-3-years limit. Ask if your area is exempt.
- Take notes during the call — note case number, worker name, date, decisions made, next steps.
5. After the interview
- Agency decides within 30 days (expedited 7-day processing if income very low and assets < $100)
- You'll receive an approval or denial letter
- If approved, you'll receive EBT card by mail in 7-10 days
- If denied, you have 90 days to appeal — request a "fair hearing"
