Food help during pregnancy
Multiple paths to free food + nutrition support during pregnancy. WIC is the highest-priority — designed specifically for pregnant women, postpartum, and infants under 1. Income limit is 185% of federal poverty level (much higher than SNAP).

Medicaid coverage during pregnancy
Most states extend Medicaid eligibility to pregnant women up to 200% FPL or higher. Medicaid covers prenatal care, delivery, postpartum care, AND auto-enrolls you in WIC. Apply at healthcare.gov or your state Medicaid portal.
Food pantries with prenatal items
Some food pantries operate "baby pantry" or "maternity" programs distributing prenatal vitamins, infant formula, baby food, diapers, and pregnancy-appropriate groceries. Search Feed America for the nearest pantry, then call to ask if they have a prenatal program.
Hospital social-work referrals
Every prenatal-care provider should refer you to local food assistance programs. Ask your OB/GYN, midwife, or hospital social worker about: WIC enrollment, Medicaid extension, local diaper banks, lactation support, formula assistance.
SNAP for pregnant women
SNAP doesn't have specific pregnancy eligibility, but pregnant women count as 1.0 in household size for SNAP allotments (some states count pregnancy as additional person for limits). If your household qualifies, apply at apply-snap.
Specific nutrition supplements
- Prenatal vitamins: WIC covers in some states; Medicaid covers as a prescription benefit; many free clinics distribute
- Iron supplements: Same — WIC nutrition counseling can prescribe; pediatrician/OBGYN can write Rx
- Folic acid: Critical first trimester; often included in prenatal vitamins
- Special-needs nutrition (gestational diabetes, etc.): WIC RD nutritionists can develop a custom food package

FAQ
Can I get WIC if I'm undocumented?
Yes. WIC has no immigration status requirement — your status does not affect WIC eligibility. WIC is not considered a "public charge" benefit and does not affect immigration cases.
Will WIC affect my prenatal Medicaid?
No — they're complementary. Many states auto-enroll pregnant Medicaid recipients in WIC.
How fast can I start getting WIC food?
WIC issues benefits at the initial appointment (~1 hour). You can typically use the food package the same day.
I had a miscarriage — am I still eligible for WIC?
Yes. WIC continues coverage for 6 months postpartum after pregnancy ends, regardless of outcome. Postpartum support is critical and intentional.
