Apply for WIC in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico WIC (Departamento de Salud) administers WIC for Puerto Rico residents. WIC provides free food vouchers, infant formula, breastfeeding support, and nutrition counseling for pregnant parents and kids under 5. Income limit 185% of federal poverty (more generous than SNAP's 130%).

Who qualifies

• Pregnant, postpartum, or breastfeeding parents
• Infants and children under age 5
• Income at or below 185% of federal poverty level
• Puerto Rico residents (residence requirement, no citizenship requirement)

What WIC provides

• Food vouchers / EBT card for milk, cereal, eggs, peanut butter, fresh fruits/vegetables, whole grains, beans, juice
• Infant formula (typically Similac or Enfamil) for non-breastfed babies
• Breastfeeding support — peer counselors, breast pumps, lactation rooms
• Nutrition counseling from registered dietitians
• Referrals to immunization, doctor visits, family services

How to apply in Puerto Rico

2. Call to schedule an appointment at the clinic (most require appointments)
3. Bring documents:
   • Photo ID
   • Proof of Puerto Rico residence
   • Proof of household income (pay stubs, SNAP/Medicaid letter, etc.)
   • The pregnant parent or child applying for benefits (in person)
4. Brief health + nutrition assessment at the appointment (~30-45 min)
5. Receive benefits — most Puerto Rico WIC participants get an EBT card; some clinics still use paper vouchers
