BIE schools serve American Indian and Alaska Native students under the federal Indian Education Act. Most participate in free National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs, plus USDA Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program. Tribally-Controlled schools are owned and operated by tribes under federal contract; BIE-Operated schools are directly run by the Bureau.
