How to volunteer with Feed America
Feed America (EIN 92-1761881) is a small Houston-based 501(c)(3) operating without paid staff. Founder Sharika Parkes runs the organization in volunteer capacity. This means our direct-volunteer needs are limited — but the mission scales through partner pantries that are the real front lines.
Three paths to volunteer with our mission
1. Volunteer at a local food pantry (HIGHEST IMPACT)
Feed America operates the directory; the actual food distribution happens at 70,000+ community food pantries. They need volunteers daily — sorting donations, packing boxes, distributing food, driving mobile pantries, registering clients. This is where your time has the most direct impact on hunger.
- Search food-pantry-near-me for a pantry in your ZIP
- Click the listing, get phone + address
- Call to ask about their volunteer schedule + sign-up process
- Show up — most pantries train on the spot
Partner pantries we particularly recommend: large regional food banks (good organized programs), soup kitchens (immediate front-line work), mobile pantry routes (driving + heavy lifting), faith-based pantries (consistent shifts).
2. Help us verify pantry data
Our 327,000-location directory needs continuous verification — hours change, programs end, new pantries open. We're always looking for distributed volunteers who can verify pantries in their own area.
- Pick 5-10 pantries near you in our directory
- Call each to confirm hours, services, requirements
- Send updates to data@feedam.org with the pantry ID + corrections
- ~30 minutes per pantry; do as many as you have time for
3. Research, partnerships, or technical contribution
For specific roles:
- Academic research: research@feedam.org — open data, citation collaboration
- Partner integration: partners@feedam.org — 211 networks, healthcare SDOH platforms, civic-tech projects
- Press / journalism: press@feedam.org — interviews, fact-checking, story angles
- Data verification at scale: data@feedam.org
What we DON'T have
- Salaried staff positions — founder operates in volunteer capacity
- Office volunteer roles (we operate distributed, no physical office hosting)
- Direct food distribution events under the Feed America name (we operate the directory; partner pantries do the distribution)
- Annual volunteer hour minimums
Why we operate this way
Feed America is infrastructure-first by design. By keeping the operating model lean (no paid staff, ~98% program-spending ratio), we keep our donor dollars going to platform infrastructure + data verification + open-data publication. The trade-off: limited direct-volunteer programs at the parent organization level. The compensation: maximum partner-pantry visibility through our directory, where most volunteer work is happening anyway.
Other ways to help
- Donate to support directory infrastructure (CC BY 4.0 open data is funded by donations)
- Other ways to get involved
- Partner with us (organizations + integrations)
- Share this directory with someone who needs food assistance
