Food Help for Blind and Low-Vision People
~7M Americans live with significant visual impairment. Food barriers include: reading labels, navigating pantries / grocery stores, safe meal preparation. This page lists specific resources: NFB, ACB, visual-assistance apps, OT skills training, pantry accommodations.
1. National organizations

2. Be My Eyes and assistive apps
- Be My Eyes — bemyeyes.com. FREE app. Volunteer video-callers help read labels, navigate stores, identify items.
- Aira — aira.io. Professional service. Cost subsidized in many places (some stores pay, free for user).
- Seeing AI (Microsoft) — FREE. Reads text, identifies objects, scans barcodes. Works offline.
- Google Lookout — FREE. Similar to Seeing AI. Reads labels + identifies food.

3. SNAP — visual disability
- SSI/SSDI for legal blindness — SSA listing 2.02 (Statutory Blindness): vision ≤20/200 corrected or visual field ≤20° qualifies
- SSDI Blind Work Expense — work-related costs (transport, equipment) NOT counted as income for SSDI
- SSI Special Limit — legally blind 65+ can earn more before losing SSI
- Receiving SSI/SSDI makes SNAP medical deduction immediate — expenses: ophthalmology visits, aids (magnifiers, CCTVs), cane, guide dog, transport
- Guide dog — food + vet care + training are SNAP-deductible medical expenses
4. Pantry accessibility
- ADA-compliant pantries — all pantries receiving federal funding (TEFAP, etc.) must be ADA-compliant
- Volunteer assistants — most pantries assign a volunteer to help read + select items
- Call ahead — request specific accommodation. Pantry may pre-pack selection before your arrival.
- Home delivery — some pantries offer delivery for blind people — ask 211
5. EBT online — accessible
- Amazon Prime Access — $6.99/mo with SNAP. Excellent VoiceOver / TalkBack accessibility. Online label reading + home delivery. Often best option.
- Walmart+ Assist — $6.47/mo. Accessible app.
- Instacart — accessible app. Shoppers can find specific items.
- Call grocery store — most major chains have free "personal shopper" for disabled customers. Ask for it.

6. OT — safe cooking training
Vision-specialized Occupational Therapists teach adapted safe cooking. Covered by insurance after vision loss.
- Techniques: cutting without vision, oven marking, pantry organization with tactile labels
- Adapted equipment: talking timers, talking scales, Braille labelers
- CVRT (Certified Vision Rehabilitation Therapist) — daily living skills specialists
- State disability services department — Vocational Rehabilitation pays for free training for visually-impaired workers
7. Meals on Wheels for blind
- Meals on Wheels accepts blind / low vision clients regardless of age if homebound
- Hot meals delivered + social visit = reduces isolation
- Generally no cost under Older Americans Act or AAA financing
