Food help for Long COVID
The CDC estimates 6.9% of US adults (~17.6 million) currently live with Long COVID, and roughly 44 million have had it at some point. About 1 in 4 with Long COVID report significant functional limitations. Shopping, cooking, and even eating can become impossible. This page covers food + benefits + clinical trials.
Three core food-related challenges
- Post-exertional malaise (PEM): Physical exertion (even cooking) triggers crashes lasting days. Solution: pacing — pre-prepared meals, frozen, home-delivered.
- MCAS / histamine intolerance: Hyperactivated mast cells post-COVID release histamine with high-histamine foods (aged cheese, wine, fish, fermented, leftovers). Pivot to low-histamine diet.
- POTS and gastroparesis: Dysautonomia causes nausea, early satiety, abdominal pain on eating. Solution: small frequent meals (5-6/day), fluids, extra salt for POTS.
Federal benefits as a disability
- HHS/DOJ joint guidance July 2021: Long COVID can be a disability under the ADA, Section 504, and Section 1557 if it substantially limits major activities (walking, concentrating, sleeping, eating).
- SSDI/SSI: Apply with documentation of confirmed COVID-19 + persistent symptoms >12 months + functional limitations. Wait time ~6-12 months; disability attorney can speed up. Initial Long COVID approval rate ~30%.
- FMLA: 12 weeks unpaid/year if employer has 50+ employees.
- SNAP / EBT: Out of work or reduced income from Long COVID — eligible. 1-person household: up to $292/month (2026).
- Medicaid: Expanded coverage in expansion states up to 138% FPL (~$21,597 individual 2026).
- Senior / disabled SNAP — medical deduction: Medical expenses >$35/month deductible (transport to RECOVER appointments, OTC supplements, copays).
Home-delivered meals (key if you have PEM)
- Meals on Wheels America — mealsonwheelsamerica.org. For 60+ AND adults with disabilities in many localities. Call 211 for your local program.
- Medically Tailored Meals (MTM) Medicaid waivers — covered by Medicaid in CA, MA, NC, NJ, NY via 1115 waivers (2024-2026). FoodisMedicineCoalition.org.
- Mom's Meals, Sunmeal, Magic Kitchen — Medicaid/Medicare frozen meal programs. ~$8-12/meal if paying, $0 with coverage.
- God's Love We Deliver (NYC, NJ), Project Open Hand (SF/LA), Project Angel Food (LA), Open Hand Atlanta — free medically-tailored meals.
- Food banks with home delivery — many regional banks have "homebound delivery" programs. Find your regional bank →
Anti-inflammatory diet (ME/CFS + Long COVID consensus)
No single diet cures Long COVID. Patient + clinician consensus:
- Mediterranean / anti-inflammatory: vegetables, fruits, whole grains, olive oil, fatty fish 2x/week, nuts.
- Reduce inflammation: avoid refined sugar, processed carbs, industrial seed oils (canola, soy, corn), alcohol.
- Antioxidants: blueberries, turmeric, green tea, pomegranate.
- Omega-3: salmon, sardines, chia seeds, walnuts.
- Prebiotic fiber: artichokes, garlic, onions, bananas, oats — supports gut microbiome.
- Hydration + electrolytes for POTS: 2-3L water + 5-10g extra sodium/day. LMNT, Liquid IV, table salt.
Low-histamine diet (if you have MCAS)
If you have flushing, itching, tachycardia after eating, consider a 4-6 week histamine elimination protocol:
- AVOID: aged/blue cheese, wine, beer, vinegar, fish (tuna, mackerel, sardines unless fresh), tomatoes, spinach, fermented (sauerkraut, kimchi, miso, kombucha), cured meats, leftovers >24h.
- SAFE: fresh meat and fish frozen/cooked same day, rice, potatoes, apples, pears, broccoli, carrots, zucchini, fresh milk.
- Supplements discussed in MCAS literature: quercetin, vitamin C, DAO (diamine oxidase), cromolyn sodium Rx.
- Systematically reintroduce after 4-6 weeks to identify individual triggers.
Pacing and meals for PEM
- Batch cook on good days — freeze individual portions.
- Slow cooker / Instant Pot — 5 min prep, 6-8 hours autonomous.
- Pre-made smoothies: protein powder + frozen fruit + milk/water.
- Ready-meal services: Trifecta, Factor, Nutrisystem — SNAP eligible in some states (Online SNAP).
- Ask family/friends to cook for you — asking for help is not weakness.
NIH RECOVER clinical trials
- RECOVER initiative — recovercovid.org. NIH funded ~$1.6B for Long COVID. Multiple trials ongoing 2026: extended Paxlovid, ivermectin + fluvoxamine, LDN (low-dose naltrexone) therapy, HBOT (hyperbaric oxygen) therapy.
